The police in Lagos have begun investigation into the death of a 17 year-old girl alleged to have committed suicide, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
Police Spokesman, Frank Mba, told NAN on Sunday that a 300-level Law student of the University of Lagos, said to be the victim’s boyfriend, had been detained in connection with the case.
Mba, however, said that the detention of the 21-year-old student did not suggest that he was responsible for the death.
He stressed that at the end of investigation, the police would release the student “if he is not found wanting.’’
For now, Mba said the police were investigating a case of suicide, which he said occurred on Thursday at Kalejaye Street, Shasha, Lagos, at about 8.15 p.m.
“The victim locked herself inside a room and hung herself with a wire tied to the room ceiling fan.
“When policemen visited the scene and they met her dangling naked body. No suicide note was found,†Mba said.
He said that preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was an orphan, adding that she might have hung herself over a love affair with her boyfriend.
Mba said that the body had been deposited at the public mortuary for autopsy.
He added that the police in Shasha, which carried out the preliminary investigations, had been ordered to transfer the case to the State CID, Panti, for further investigation.
