The Hwolshe Area Court in Jos, Plateau State has sentenced a 26-year-old guard, Mathew Benedict, to 18 months imprisonment for burglary and mischief.
The presiding judge, Alhaji Umar Shuaibu, who delivered the judgment in Jos on Wednesday, however, gave the convict an option of N3,000 fine.
The prosecutor, Cpl. Yohanna Markus, told the court that Benedict burgled the house of Mr. Michael Jones in the GRA, Jos, on 17 October by climbing the roof.
He said that one Tongshinung Simon, of Syndicate Security posted to guard the house, sighted the convict and raised an alarm.
“But Benedict jumped from the roof and escaped in spite of the injuries he sustained.
The prosecutor further told the court that Benedict was traced to his house by security operatives who trailed drops of blood.
The prosecutor presented two witnesses who testified and tendered instruments used in the burglary.
Benedict pleaded guilty to the charges and begged for leniency, saying that it was the devil that pushed him into committing the act.
Before handing down the judgement, Shuaibu warned him to be of good behaviour after serving the sentence.
