Egberongbe Cup: Eletu Sad Over Team’s Defeat

Lekan Eletu, the coach of Ward E2 in Apapa Local Government Area is sad over his team failure to win Egberongbe Cup held at the Christian Secondary School, Apapa, Lagos State, Nigeria.

Ward C defeated Ward E2 4-2 on penalty shootout after ending the regulation time a goal a piece.

Five Wards took part in the championship, sponsored by Mufutau Egberongbe, who is representing the Apapa Constituency 1 in the Lagos State House of Assembly.

In a match watched by a large crowd, Ward E2 striker, Dauda Apatapiti drew the first blood in the 26th minute to send their fans into wild jubilation.

Ward C, that came back stronger into the match mounted pressure on their opponents, however got an equaliser in the 40th minute through Goodluck Egbe.

Eletu’s team finally lost the cup during the penalty shootout. After the tie, Eletu said he was bitter that his team failed to win the match. He said Ward C did not deserve to win the game and expressed his disappointment.

“Our players disappointed me because we were in control of the game before our opponents equalised. The defeat was painful because we lost to an average team. We will go back to our Ward and prepare for the next edition,” he said.

Ward C Coach, Sunday Adah, expressed gratitude to God for the victory. He confessed that the match was the toughest game of his coaching career at least for now.

“Honestly, I didn’t expect our boys to win the match, especially when we were one goal down. But with the determination of our team, the players went ahead to win the game for me. It calls for celebration,” said Adah who vowed to defend the title in the next edition.

Commenting on the match, Egberongbe said both teams played good football, noting that the better side won at the end of the day.

He said the competition was sponsored to bring out the best in the youths of his constituency and promised to sponsor more sporting events.

At the Cup presentation, Ward C received a giant trophy with the sum of N50, 000 while the first runner up went home with the sum of N30, 000
