Residents of Surulere, Agbado Oke-odo Local Council Development Area, Lagos State, southwest Nigeria have decried the poor state of infrastructure in the area. They said it has impacted negatively on economic development in the community.

They said the community, which include Amikanle, Agbenuba and Suberu Oje, among others had been completely neglected by past governments in the state.

According to the Chairman, Surulere East Community Development Area, Pa Owolabi Saubana, there are no motorable roads in the community, which has a population of over 300,000 people. “Our major problems are bad roads and lack of drainage channels. From Suberu Oje, Alafia and Ray Power/White House roads, the entire area cannot boast of a single motorable road. It is even worse in the rainy season,” he said.

The 70-year-old retiree added that electricity supply to the area by the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, had been epileptic in spite of the contributions of the community to the installation of a transformer to serve the need of the people. He praised the people of the community, particularly the Baale of Surulere, Alhaji Nurudeen Adewale, for their contributions to the development of the area.

Another residence of the area, Mr. Sakirudeen Ajayi said that the community also lacked adequate educational institutions to cater for the growing population in the community.

He said the only two schools in the area, Nurudeen Adewale Primary School and a secondary school could not adequately cater for the people, and called on Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola and the Chairman of the LCDA, Pastor Kenny Okumuyide, to come to their aid.
