Rivers To Close Down Poorly-Staffed Schools

The Rivers State Government is to close down any public school in the state that does not have the required number of teachers in the system by June 2011.

This was part of the outcome of the four-day Education Retreat organised by the state government  in Calabar to discuss the issue of content, management and sustainability.

The retreat with the theme Quality, Sustainability and Management of Education in Rivers State also x-rayed the role and quality of teachers in the advancement of the education sector reforms and resolved to consider the option of recertification of teachers in the state.

The state governor, Mr. Chibuike Amaechi, who chaired the retreat, emphasised that the move was to enable government identify and equip the teachers that would work in the new education system in the state.

The governor assured that government would, in furtherance of the above, employ new and qualified teachers in its primary and secondary schools, in addition to engaging new teachers for the new model secondary schools, emphasizing that management of the model schools would be out-sourced for five years to ensure efficiency.

Similarly the governor has directed the Ministry of Education to drop all Education Secretaries who are not technically qualified to perform the duties of the office, as such assignments must be handled by professionals in educational management.

He, however, urged the ministry to carry out proper assessment of the officers to determine their competence.

The State Chief Executive also directed the Commissioner for Education to constitute the Education Authorities in the various local government areas with a view to reducing the burden on the State Universal Basic Education (SUBEB) management.
