A Lagos lawyer, Barrister Ebun Adegboruwa, has called on Nigerians to pass a vote of no confidence on their representatives in the national assembly because they have failed to live up to expectations.
Delivering a paper entitled: ”The Misuse of Oversight Roles of Legislatures in Modern Democracy: A Case Study of Nigeria,†at the Lagos Airport Hotel, venue of the 7th All Yoruba Youth Conference, Adegboruwa accused the country’s legislators of self serving and failing to protect the interest of the electorate.
He described most of them as businessmen who did not have the interest of their people at heart.
“Most assembly men are businessmen. We should pass a vote of no confidence on them. They are not representing us, rather what they are doing is to line their pockets. They are toothless bulldogs and errand boys of the executive because they cannot check their excesses. They have failed to hold the executive accountable to the people,†he stated.
Adegboruwa criticized the legislators for abusing the impeachment clause in the constitution and milking the nation dry through their outrageous allowances.
“Our legislators are not prepared to make sacrifices. They’ve appropriated our resources to themselves. They are not gentlemen because they fight among themselves,†he added.
In his own remarks at the occasion, Lagos State governor, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola, who was represented by his Senior Special Assistant (Media), Mr. Hakeem Bello, thanked the youths for their support for his administration and called on them to continue by participating in the voters’ registration exercise so that they can vote.
Chairman, Coordinating Committee of Coalition of Oodua Self Determination Groups, COSEG, Comrade Dayo Ogunlana, called for the empowerment of Yoruba youths, adding that no youth should allow himself to be used as a thug in the forthcoming 2011 elections.
