An eye doctor and President of Nigerian Optometric Association, Dr. Okey Okoroji,  has called on people to donate their eye for use after their demise.

“This is necessary because it will help boost corneal transplant in the country,’’  Okoroji told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)

NAN reports that corneal transplantation, also known as corneal grafting, is a  surgical procedure where a damaged or diseased cornea is replaced by donated corneal  tissue which has been removed from a recently deceased individual.

The cornea however, must be free from disease.

Okoroji said many Nigerians were not aware they could donate their eyes to help  other regain sight.

“For now, the awareness level is zero and as professionals, we have been advising  patients who have the problem to seek assistance abroad.

“It is not that we can not do it here in Nigeria, the National Eye Centre and some  teaching hospitals have the capacity to do so.
