Wanted Robbery Suspect Caught, Remanded

The police in Lagos have arrested a notorious robbery suspect who has been  terrorising residents of Idita area of Apongbon and Marina-CMS axis of Lagos Island,  Lagos for a long time, armed with gun and other dangerous weapons.

The suspect, identified as Ganiyu Abiodun, accoding to the police, has been on their  wanted list since June 2009 after he robbed one Omotayo Oluwatosin of his two Nokia  handsets, valued at N60,000 and Monsura Shittu of his two handsets worth N38,000.

Nemesis caught up with him on 30 August, 2010 when he robbed Mrs. Taiye Babatunde of  her N73,000, 14-inch television set, one DVD player, one CD player and radio  cassette player, valued at N123,000 at 109, Makoro Street, Marina, Lagos.

He was arrested at a hideout following a tip off from members of the public and was  charged before the Ebute-Metta Magistrate’s Court on a five-count charge of  committing felony, to wit, armed robbery.

The offence is contrary to Section 5(b) and punishable under Section 1(2), 12(a) of  the Robbery and Firearms (special provisions) Act, Cap. 398, Vol. XXII, Laws of the  Federation of Nigeria, 1990 as amended and Section 451 of the Criminal Code, Cap.17,  Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.

The magistrate, Mr. M.O. Olubi did not take his plea. He ordered that he should be  remanded in prison custody and adjourned the matter till 24 November, 2010.
