Upcoming Nigerian player, Samuel Omoile has called on the corporate organisations in the country to come to the aid of the players to enable them play tournaments outside Nigeria.
Omoile upset Russian player, Filenkov Alexei, ranked 1420 in the world, in a first round match of Futures 2 in straight sets of 7-5, 6-4.
He, however, fell to the superior strokes of Ivorain star, Terence Nugent in the the second round of the Etisalat/FCMB sponosred tounrey at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan, though with a good fight. He lost the match 5-7,7-5, 6-4.
Omolie said he did not regret losing to Nugent in the pulsating encounter, believing he had a good outing in the ITF approved competition.
“There is no way Nigerian players can perform better in the Governor’s Cup if they continue to stay back in the country without going abroad to play in international competitions,†he said.
“That is why corporate organisations should come to our aid by sponsoring some us to play circuits around the world. For me, I have the opportunity of playing abroad because Chevron has been sponsoriing my trips in the past few years and I’m glad with the oil company’s sponsorship,†he said.
Omoile disclosed that he is going to Sudan to feature in another ITF approved Futures immediately after the Governor’s Cup.
“After crashing out of the Governor’s Cup, my next destination is Sudan, where a competition will hold. I hope Chevron supports me to make the trip. For a tennis player to improve on his game, there is no short cut to it than to play tournaments regularly.
“That’s why some of us who get the chance to travel around, perform better in the Governor’s Cup. You can see the game of Clifford Enosoregbe and that of Destiny Ford Da Silva in this year’s tournament.
