Holland’s Boy Westerhof rekindled his determination to win Futures 2 of the 10th Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis Championship with a victory that earned him qualification to the quarter final of the ITF approved competition.
Westerhof, who is ranked number 577 in the world beat Daniel Berta of Sweden 5-7,6-3,6-3 in one of the second round matches of the FCMB/Etisalat sponsored championship at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan. Westerhof, who crashed out in the quarterfinal of Futures 1 last week ,will face stiff opposition from Terence Nugent of Ivory Coast in today’s quarter final match. Nugent beat upcoming Nigerian player, Samuel Omoile 5-7, 7-5,6-4.
Meanwhile, all Nigerian players in the Men’s Singles have crashed out of the competition. Clifford Enosoregbe, who beat Futures 1 winner, Amir Weintraub of Israel was sent packing by Ivorian Valentin Sanon. He was forced to retire 0-5 from the match after he has lost the first set of the second round game 3-6. Abdulmumini Babalola failed to live up to expectations in his match against Indian Karan Rastogi as he was beaten 2-6, 1-6. Another Indian, Ranjeet Virali-Murugesan beat Candy Idoko 6-1,6-1. Israeli Gilad Ben Zvi beat Shehu Lawal 6-7(7), 7-5, 6-3. Kingsley Enosoregbe was stopped by Raven Klaasen of South Africa in a game that ended in straight sets of 6-1,6-0.
