Djurgardens of Sweden defender, Onome Ebi, believes the Super Falcons of Nigeria are the team to beat when the 2010 Africa Women Championships (AWC) begin on 30 October.
The Falcons will begin their 2010 AWC campaign on 1 November against Mali and then take on the hosts, South Africa four days later. Uche Ucharia’s squad round off their preliminary campaign against Tanzania in Makhulong on 7, October
“It will be tough no doubt, but I can tell you that none of the teams will be looking forward to playing against us,†Ebi told SuperSport.com.
Ebi hinged her optimism on the rich tradition of Nigeria in the competition since its inception in 1998. The Falcons won the first five editions and reached the last four at the previous edition in Equitoria Guinea, two years ago. Ebi believes the team will learn from the mistakes of two years ago and come back stronger in South Africa.
The former Bayelsa Queens defender also believes the unique nature of the current squad will put them in a very strong position to gun for the big prize. She praised Coach Eucharia Uche for integrating youngsters and experienced players in the squad.
“We have both young and old players and that is good. Some of the girls that did well with the Falcons at the last U-20 World Cup in Germany like Ebere Orji and Ugochi Oparanozie are in the team. The experienced ones like myself, Stella (Mbachu) and Perpetua Nkwocha will also help the team,†she said.
On countries the Falcons will be wary of at the championships, Ebi said they would not be singling any side out for special attention.
“People talk about Ghana and South Africa but for us, we are not looking at those two countries. All the teams that qualified are good and we will not underrate any opponent,†she concluded.
