What could have been a serious mayhem in Ekiti was today averted by the Ekiti State  Police Command as they swooped on some members of the National Union of Road  Transport Workers (NURTW).

They were allegedly holding an illegal meeting to launch attacks at various motor  parks across the state.

Leading the team on the instruction of the state Commissioner of Police, Kakwe  Christopher Katso, the Commander of Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, Supol  Okoronkwo C. Ogbonna, a Superintendent of Police rounded up the hoodlums at Ekute  Area of Ado-Ekiti and arrested them.

Among those arrested were: Opeyemi Sanni alias Jambara, Kehinde Joseph alias Olumbo,  Dele Akinyede alias Actor, Adefarise Kazeem, Folamise Wale, Fatai Bamiyo Mashal and  Deji Daramola.

The hoodlums were arrested at about 3:45 this morning.

The reason why they wanted to launch attack in the city was to hijack the control of  the union from the Omolafe Aderiye-led executive whose term expires next year  August.

Sources very close to the police hinted P.M.NEWS this morning that following a tip  off around 3am that some hoodlums were gathering to cause mayhem in the state, the  Ekiti Sate Commissioner of Police dispatched policemen from the SARS in the state.

“Immediately the CP learnt that NURTW members wanted to strike, he summoned his men  led by Ogboona to abort the operation. They met the hoodlums strategizing for the  meeting and engaged them in a battle. They wanted to escape but they could not. This  is the attempt of the command to ensure that the state is crisis free during this  era of democratic dispensation,” our source revealed.

The arrest was made a day after the aggrieved members of the union signed an  undertaking that they would maintain peace in the state.

Last Friday, six NURTW members who launched attack on the Omolafe group were  arrested around 8pm. Those arrested were Ekundayo Emmanuel, Ayeni Felix, Ajibade  Akeem, Najimu Ibrahim, Taiwo Oluwaseyi and Gbenga Bamgboye.
