A 19-year old girl in Minna, capital of Niger State, North Central Nigeria, has been arrested by the police for fabricating a kidnap story in order to extort money from her parents, the police said.
P.M.NEWS learnt that Nansat, an indigene of Pangu local government area of Plateau State, North Central Nigeria, informed her parents via telephone that she had been kidnapped by ritualists and could be killed if a ransom was not promptly paid.
Her parents, who live in Plateau State, immediately called on the Niger State Police Command to rescue their daughter from the kidnappers’ den in Minna where Nansat lived.
Investigations, however, revealed that Nansat was a live-in-lover. She stayed with her boyfriend. She was arrested and paraded.
The Niger State Police Commissioner, Mr. Mike Zoukumor, said that after dispatching a team of officers to rescue the suspect, it was discovered that she lived comfortably with her boyfriend in Minna.
The police said that Nansat joined her boyfriend last week from Abuja and immediately discovered that they needed money for a better life. She then came up with the idea of concocting a kidnap story.
“It was when the suspect arrived Minna that she started sending messages and making phone calls to her family that she had been kidnaped by some ritualists in Minna,â€Â Zoukumor said.
The Police Commissioner, who described the development as unfortunate, however, said that the suspect will not be charged with any crime but will be handed over to her parents when they arrive Minna this week.
