A delegation of the Ekiti State House of Assembly on Sunday left Nigeria on a six-day legislative tour of Germany, in a bid to enhance its legislative functions.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the delegation, made up of the 26Â members of the House, was led by the Speaker, Mr. Olatunji Odeyemi (PDP, Gbonyin).
Speaking shortly before their departure, the leader of PDP in the House, Mr. Layi Oke (PDP, Ijero) explained that the tour was aimed at boosting and enriching the legislative experience of the members.
“All the 26 members of the Ekiti House of Assembly are embarking on a six-day tour of Germany to enhance and enrich their legislative experience, because Germany has a well established democratic setting.
“The tour, which was approved by former Gov. Segun Oni, before his election was nullified on Oct. 15, will afford members the opportunity to gather experiences about legislative functions and practice in that country,†Oke said.
He said that the PDP caucus in the house had promised to form “a constructive opposition’’ to the ACN government in the state, in a bid to move the 14 –year old state forward.
“The allegation that PDP members in the house are planning to defect is nauseating and amounts to an insult on the collective intelligence of the members; we want to say, with all sense of modesty that no member will defect to the ruling party.
“We are solidly behind our party (PDP) and sooner than later its achievements in the state will be seen and known by the people,’’ Oke said.
He described Oni’s removal as a temporary setback, saying that he was confident that the PDP would stage a come-back in “a free and fair elections in 2011.’’
