Nigeria’s 14th indigenous Inspector General of Police, Ogbonna Okechukwu Onovo was this morning pulled out of the Nigeria Police Force in a very colourful parade at the Eagle Square Complex in Abuja.

Mr. Onovo was announced as the nation’s top cop on 27 July, 2009 but his tenure was terminated on 8 September, 2010 by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

The retired Inspector General was pulled out of the force alongside 6 Deputy Inspectors General. These are Mr. Uba Ringim, Israel Ajao, Declan Sunday Uzoma, Ekpoudum Udom, John Hamza Ahmadu and Olusegun Efuntayo.

All the retired DIGs were present at the pull out parade except DIG John Hamza Ahmadu who was said to be unavoidably absent due to an undisclosed reason.

Onovo’s brief tenure at the helm of affairs at the nation’s Police Force was characterised by kidnapping, militant and armed robbery attacks across the country, especially in the eastern states. The most prominent under him was the kidnap of executives of the Nigeria Union of Journalists who were kidnapped in Abia State on their way back from an official event in Akwa Ibom State.

The incessant attacks by a religious sect; Boko Harram, ushered in the tenure of the retired IGP and also contributed to his ouster as his men were unable to stem the tide of the killing and maiming of Nigerians in some Northern states.

Mr. Onovo’s tenure as Inspector General of Police can be said to be the shortest in recent times.
