19th October, 2010
It was excitement galore at the main bowl of the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos when the much-talked about “Friends of Rugby†organised by 2010 Lagos Rugby Union League was brought to a successful end.
The defending champions, Cowrie Rugby Football Club, successfully defended their title and made history by recording the first 100% unbeaten run in the Rugby Union League programe in Nigeria!
The co-ordinator of the league, Ntiense O Williams, stated that Cowrie Rugby Football Club have successfully defended their title which they won in 2008 and most importantly created rugby history as the only Club to have won all matches in any particular Rugby league season in Nigeria.
He said the stadium was full of life as the six rugby clubs that participated in the competition slugged it out for the final league standing.
In the first match of the day, the highly inspired Young Lions Rugby Football Club of Surulere, led by their charismatic coach/player Ntiense Williams, won their last match of the season when they defeated the Gbenga Hamed-led Gosar Rugby Football Club by 12 points to nil .
The Police Rugby team led by Michael Johnson narrowly got the better of a highly determined Lagos Rugby Football Club coached by Tunde Akerele by 8 points to 5 points, which saw them climbing one step on the final league standings.
The star match of the day surely lived up to its billing, as hard fighting Addax Rugby Football Club tried in vain to dent the record of Cowrie Rugby Football Club. The defending champions ended up beating them by 15 points to nil in a tension soaked encounter.
With the results from the 10th week league matches, the Joseph Mbu-tutored team, Cowrie Rugby Football Club, gained 5 league points to bring their tally to 56 points and emerged the champions of the 2010 Lagos Rugby Union League program, they were followed in second position by Addax Rugby Football Club with 35 points.
Notwithstanding the loss by Lagos Rugby Football Club, they still maintained the third position with 29 points. The last win by Police Machine Rugby team propelled them to 4th position with a total of 18 points to their credit.
In fifth position are Gosar Rugby Football Club with 15 points, while the last win by Young Lions Rugby Football Club was not enough to lift them from the sixth position, But they received a total of 11 points to end the season on a high.
