Governor's Cup: Main Draws Serve Off

The battle for the $80,000 prize money in the 10th Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis Championship begins today at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan.

Going by the pairings released by the tournament referee, Anton Rens, yesterday evening, the chances of some of the Nigerian players scaling the hurdles of the first round are very slim. The local players will, no doubt, face tough opposition with some of them meeting ranked foreign players in their first matches of the Main Draws today in the championship sponsored by the dou of Etisalat Nigeria and FCMB Plc.

Abdulmumini Babalola will battle Ivorian star, Valentin Sanon, who is ranked number 616 in the world. Sunday Emmanuel face Holland player, Boy Westerhof (577). Nigerian Bolaji Olawepo (1421) will face Ranjeet Virali-Murugesan. Candy Idoko has a score to settle with South African Steffen Solomon (1421).

Other matches involving the local players are the game between Ekanem Etin and Raven Klassen of South Africa. Monday Igbinovia will face Nugent Terrence. Shehu Lawal will slug it out with South Africa’s Ruan Roelofse (740).

Some Nigerians will be facing one another in today’s matches. Kingsley Enosorogbe will go to war against Samuel Omoile, while Clifford Enosorogbe will battle Henry Atseye.

Tournament number one, Niels Desin (206) of Belgium will play against Tomer Hodorov of Israel.
