Nigeria Tennis Federation, NTF, has declared that its national rankings will be one of the yardsticks to be used when giving out wild cards to the local players in the Main Draws of the Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis Championship.
The Vice President of the federation, Yemi Owoseni, said that the secretariat and the technical committee of the Governor’s Cup will meet to arrive on other criteria to be used to give out the mandatory wild cards to Nigerian players.
The International Tennis Federation, ITF, always reserve wild cards of four slots each for both men and women’s singles to the host of any international competition under its jurisdiction.
“We are going to use our national rankings as part of criteria for giving out wild cards to our players,†said Owoseni. “There will also be other things to be considered. This will be worked out by the secretariat and the technical committee of the Governor’s Cup,†he said.
Scribe of NTF, Nkana Mbora, corroborating the vice president, said the federation will leave nothing to chance to ensure that whoever gets the wild card among the local players deserved the slot.
“We’ll give the best among our players the wild cards. The federation will meet with the technical committee of the competition and I’m very sure that before the prelimiriaries begins on Saturday, names of the lucky players will be announced,â€Â she said.
After the qualifying matches this weekend, the Main Draws of the first leg of the championship start on Monday.
