A Lagos High Court Judge, Justice Olubunmi Oyewole yesterday convicted a woman, Mary Eze over a N1.5 million fraud allegation and sentenced her to prison. She will spend five years behind bars.
Mary Eze in conspiracy with other persons still at large was alleged to have at various times in May 2005 collected several sums of money totalling N1.5 million from Ogonna Ebubedike under the pretense of turning some papers into US dollars for her.
During the trial, the victim, who is a sales girl at a company that sells tarpaulin, told the court that she was hypnotized by Mary Eze and her accomplice into parting with her employers’ money.
She also told the court she did not realise that she was being duped until the charm they used to hypnotised her lost its efficacy. By then she said she had already given them about N1.5 million.
One of the 15 charges brought against Mary Eze and her accomplice now at large reads: “that you Mary Eze and Mr. Kingsley (still at large ) on or about the 29th day of May 2005 at Ikeja, within the Ikeja Judicial division, with intent to defraud, obtained the sum of N490,000 by false pretence from Miss Ogonna Ebubedike.â€
The alleged offence committed by Mary Eze is punishable under section 419 of the Criminal Code Cap c17, volume 2, laws of Lagos State Nigeria 2003.
When Mary was arraigned, she initially pleaded not guilty but admitted committing the crime.
Four witnesses, the victim, her boss Mr. Michael Anagwu, and two Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) officials, DSP Ibrahim Mohammed Yidi, testified in the matter.
Delivering judgment on the matter yesterday, Justice Oyewole held that from the evidence before him, the prosecuting counsel was able to convince the court beyond reasonable doubt that Mary Eze committed the crime she was charged with.
He subsequently sentenced her to five years inprisonment.

nawa for us in nigeria many people that hold on power positions steal billion of naira are now move confidently in our country, without arrest them, the children of pauper are put into jail when they simply made mistake without correct them or give them another chance ,what about the child of former president.all of us will reap our sown
let her reap what she sown
The capital punishment will put stop to the 419 and kidnapping business in Nigeria. Most sinners afraid death by firing squad and other capital punishment.
Na wa o. I am sure this judge does not like Mary face bcos this judgement is way toooooo much for common 1.5million. Haba. Anyway I am sure everyone will get rewarded somehow including madam judge.
This is Nonsense, how can u jail her for 5 years bcoz of 1.5M while many other stole billions and they are there. Foolish judge.
This is interesting and ridiculous! A woman wants to wash dollar out of a fake paper, is that legitimate business? Both the accuser and the accused are guilty; if the business had gone as expected, efcc would not have heard about it. This justice Oyewole gave a politician who stole tens of billions a 2year sentence but he’s been giving less privileged youngsters, whose criminal activities were consequential of the high level corruption of the high and mighty in the society, long sentences as if they are not Nigerian citizens. It is unfair and inhuman for our justice system to reserve long and hard sentences for the down-trodden while giving those who by their actions while in positions of power turned our youngsters to criminals short sentences and sometimes with option of fines. The sentences passed on the Bode Georges, Alams, Igbinedions, Tafa Baloguns etc of this world made a mockery of Nigeria’s justice system and the fight against corruption. The sentence in this particular case far outweigh the offence.
Justice Olubunmi Oyewole she is no nonsense justice, but the punishement is too hash compare with many of nigeria leaders that have involved in money lundery and emberzement of public funds are not get 5years imprisionment
e.g former NPA chaiman(billion of naira) just 2yrs….. we appyling to the chief justice to reduce the jail term.
That’s too harsh… 5 years in Nigerian jail for paltry 1.5 million naira.. i do not condone the act but c’mmon let’s be real this justice system is BAD
So the Camerounians expect the church to pay for transportation and accomodation of her citizens in Lagos?
The minister gets free services when they go to US, France, UK etc. to treat common cold and cough .. abi?
It is greatly insulting for a 2 for 10 kobo minister to cast aspertion far away in Cameroun of what happened in Lagos just by hearsay!
The minsiter should know that judgement belongs to God. If it is God it will last else!
