Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), Lagos State Governor has given approval for the organisation of traditional sports championship in Somolu and Amuwo Odofin Local Government Areas.
The Governor’s directive is coming after the successful hosting of the traditional games in Yaba and Mainland Local Government areas earlier this month.
The Office of the Special Assistant on Grassroots Sports Development to the Governor headed by Prince Wale Oladunjoye has therefore informed Lad Sports Club in Somolu, Amuwo Odofin Festival Foundation covering the Amuwo Odofin Local Government and Oriade Local Council Development Area to begin preparation for the championship.
The revived traditional games received a boost when Mainland and Yaba local governments jointly staged an interesting Ayo Olopon, Cards, Draughts and Rams charging games at St. Agnes Primary School, Sabo, Yaba early September this year
The competition moved to the Upper Campos Square, the citadel of social and political activities in Lagos Island on 11 September and took many people by surprise as most Lagosians were unaware of the resuscitation of the traditional sports in the state.
Governor Fashola’s commitment to the revival of Traditional Games as a means of keeping people, both young and old busy with participation in recreational activities in their localities, made him to further approve the staging of the events in all the 20 Local Governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas of the state.
