President Jonathan Accepts Gusau’s Resignation

President Goodluck Jonathan has finally accepted the resignation of the National Security Adviser, Lt. Gen. Aliyu Mohammed Gusau (rtd.) thus putting an end to speculations about the status of the security chief in the national cabinet.

A statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Ima Niboro, on Monday, September 20, said Lt.-Gen. Mohammed had in a letter to President Jonathan dated Thursday, September 16, 2010, informed the President of his desire to play an active part in the 2011 electoral process.

Consequently, he requested the President’s permission to vacate the Office of National Security Adviser.

Niboro said the NSA’s resignation takes effect from today, Monday, September 20, 2010.

Sources however told P.M.NEWS that Gusau, who has indicated interest to contest the 2011 presidency, submitted his resignation letter since July. No replacement has been named for him.

But Kayode Are, former Director General of the State Security Services, SSS who was appointed as the deputy NSA some months ago is expected to continue to act in that position except the President decides to appoint a new substantive NSA.
