Residents of Coates, Ibadan, Kano and Freeman streets, Oyingbo and Bornu Way in Lagos  Mainland Local Government Area of Lagos State, South West, Nigeria, have appealed to the  state government to come to their rescue over perennial flooding occasioned by silted and  collapsed drainage systems in the area.

Residents and shops owners on the affected streets claimed that the flood had paralysed  commercial activities as well affected human movement in the area.

Lagos Bulletin learnt that several letters were written to the local government in the past  over the problem but without solution in sight.

Mr. Philip Onuchukwu, a second-hand clothes dealer, one of the affected, told Lagos Bulletin  that for more than two years that he has been in the area, it has always been flood even  when there was no rain.

He attributed the cause of the flood to blocked drainages, which he said some officials from  the state government inspected last year, but up till today no move has been made to clear  them.

Mr. Okoro Uzor, also a trader in the area, stated that two people contracted to clear the  drainage by the community last year died in the course of carrying out the exercise.

Uzor appealed that to avoid such ugly occurrence, the state government should, as a matter  of urgency, proffer lasting solution to the problem.

When Lagos Bulletin visited the affected areas, it was observed that several shops were  under lock and key, probably because of flood.

It also observed that most of the drainages in the area have been blocked.

At the Mainland Local Government secretariat, a staff in the office of the Secretary to the  Local Government, said the council had informed the state government about the blocked  drainage and that it has promised to provide solution to the problem.

However,  Mr. Wasiu Ogunniyi, the Supervisor for Works, informed that the council had  visited the affected areas and that men of Drain Duck have been deployed to clear the  drainage.

Ogunniyi added that the council is not buoyant to undertake total reconstruction but  promised that work would commence as soon as fund is available.
