Cross River, Ebonyi, Bayelsa Top Crime Rate In Nigeria —Survey

A recent national crime and safety survey conducted by CLEEN Foundation with support from  Macarthur Foundation has revealed that Cross-River , Ebonyi and Bayelsa states rank first  among the 36 states of the federation in terms of robbery, rape and murder.

According to the survey which was conducted between February and May this year, robbery was  reported by respondents to be highest in Cross River, Benue and Kwara State and lowest in  Katsina, Lagos an Ogun State while the average rate of robbery in Nigeria is put at 11.1 per  cent.

The survey also showed that rape of the female was highest in Ebonyi, Bayelsa and Benue  State but completely non-existent in Zamfara, Ondo, Katsina, Jigawa and Imo state. Anambra,  Ogun and Abia states had the lowest rape cases within the period of the survey.

About 3.5 per cent of Nigerians (the highest) reported the murder of a member of their  households in Bayelsa, Ebonyi and Benue states and the lowest record in Katsina, Lagos and  Osun states.

The survey findings also showed that an average of 16.9 per cent of Nigerians had reported  domestic violence, with the highest record in Kwara, Gombe and Yobe states and the lowest  records from Katsina, Ekiti and Jigawa states.

Statistics from the survey showed that Abia, Imo and Ebonyi states recorded the  highest  rate of kidnapping in the country while states like Lagos, Katsina and Borno recorded the  least.

The total sample size for the survey was 10,228 comprising 50 per cent male and 50 per cent  female of 18 years and above.

The methodology used in the data collection was in-home, face to face personal interviews,  using a stratified multi-stage random selection procedure in order to achieve a national  representative sample.
