Yaba, Mainland Holds Traditional Sports Tourney

The maiden Draughts, Ayo-Olopon, Cards and Ram Charging Championship orgainsed by Mainland  Movers Organisation, Lagos State Traditional Sports Association in conjunction with the  Office of the Senior Special Assistant on Grassroots Sports Development to Governor Raji  Fashola came to an end on Saturday.

The finals, which were held at St. Agnes Nursery and Primary School, Yaba, Lagos, saw  winners emerging in the various sports featured in the weeklong tourney.

Taiwo Johnson of Rowe Park Club emerged the winner in Ayo-Olopon after defeating Alale  Babatunde also of Rowe Park 2-0 in the final. He smiled home with the sum of N10, 000 and a  gold medal, while Babatunde won a silver medal with the sum of N7, 500. Prince Ade  Adenigbagbe of Makoko Club won the first bronze medal with the sum of N2, 500, while Gabriel  Tinubu won the second bronze with N2, 500.

Rasaq Timi of Iwaya Club won gold medal in Draughts after a keenly contested game that ended  2-0 with Femi Giwa of Casino Club. He won N10, 000, while Giwa settled for the silver medal  with the sum of N7, 500. Tunde Adigun and Ezekiel Gbengbe won the two bronze medals with the  sum of N2, 500.

In the cards contest, Rilwan Emmanuel of Arowolo Club won the gold medal with the sum of  N10, 000 after he defeated Alabi Oluwole of Federal Civil Service Club 2-1 in the final.  Oluwole got N7, 500. The two bronze medals and N2, 500 went to Amos Ogun (Iwaya Balogun  Club) and Alade Babatunde of Rowe Park.

The star contest of the day was the Ram Charging which saw Shadow of Ward D Makoko, winning  the gold medal with the sum of N25, 000. Second position went to IBB of Ward G, Iwaya with a  sliver medal and N15, 000. Exodus of Ward C, Onike came third with a bronze medal and the  sum of N10, 000.

Speaking after he was decorated with his gold medal, Emmanuel, who won the card contest  poured encomiums on Governor Raji Fashola for giving approval for the organisation of the  traditional tourney, adding that if the tournament is organised regularly it will help keep  the youths busy at the grassroots.

“You can see the turn out of people at the finals today (Saturday). It showed that if our  government can sustain this tourney, it will help keep most of us busy from social vices. I  thank Governor Fashola and the Senior Special Assistant of Grassroots Sports Development,  Prince Wale Oladunjoye, for coming up with this tournament,” he said.

Prince Oladunjoye has revealed that the tourney will be held in all the local governments  and the Local Council Development Areas in the state, adding that the competition’s train  will move to Lagos Island West and East in the next few days.
