Nigerian Bar Association has insisted that the huge salaries of members of the National Assembly must be slashed. The salaries have been described as “Jumbo Pay”.
According to NBA in a 29-point communique issued after the five-day annual general conference held at Murtal Square, Kaduna, the pay cannot be justified in view of the prevalent abject poverty in the country.
The NBA therefore demanded for a downward review of salaries of both members of the Senate and House of Representatives.
Also in the communique signed by the immediate past NBA boss, Chief Rotimi Akeredelo, SAN , the legal association maintained that INEC and security agencies must live up to their constitutional as well as legal responsibilities to ensure credible elections in 2011.
It equally stated that for Nigeria to move forward, it must develop a mechanism for conducting credible, free and fair elections, adding that politicians must imbibe the culture of tolerance, self control, discipline and courage to accept electoral outcome.
NBAÂ condemned what it termed endemic corruption within the judiciary and promised to expose such despicable act.
