Hope Democratic Party, HDP, has slammed the national chairman of Peoples Progressive Party, PPP, and now 2012 Edo governorship apsirant on the same party platform, Mr. Solomon Edebiri, over his claim that over a thousand members of HDP in Edo State have defected to PPP.

In a statement by Isidahomhen Idumonza, the National Media and Strategy Adviser, HDP,  the party said Edebiri lied about the defection, adding that nothing like that happened.

According to the statement by HDP, Edebiri “has engaged himself in cheap blackmail and outright falsehood. In a statement published in the Nigerian Tribune on Tuesday, August 24, 2010, Edebiri told journalists that over a thousand members of Hope Democratic Party in Edo State have defected to the unknown PPP. Though HDP has no intention of joining issues with Edebiri, it is only necessary to put the record straight and state unequivocally that no registered member of HDP in Edo State has defected or even intend to defect to PPP. All the members are intact and are making steady progress in the pursuit of the party’s noble objectives.”

HDP added that the two people who attended PPP meeting in Benin on Saturday, 21 August 2010 were expelled members who were found to be liars and conduct themselves in a manner inconsistent with HDP’s ideas and principles.

“While we recognise the right of Edebiri to issue public statement, it is only honourable not to begin with falsehood. The good people of Edo deserve a truthful leader that can only be found in HDP.”
