Don’t Burn The Qu’ran

For whatever reason The Dove World Outreach Centre in Gainesville, Florida,  USA, is setting out to commemorate the 9th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 dubbed 9/11 terror attacks by burning the Qu’ran publicly, on claims that slam is an ‘evil religion’.

The church pastor, Terry Jones, was quoted as saying by the CNN: “We believe that Islam is of the devil, that it’s causing billions of people to go to hell, it is a deceptive religion, it is a violent religion and that is proven many, many times.”

The Facebook page that has more than 1,600 fans also has a very inciting message. “Eternal fire is the only destination the Quran can lead people to, so we want to put the Quran in its place – the fire!” the page says.

The church also launched a YouTube video to disseminate the message. “I mean ask yourself, have you ever really seen a really happy Muslim? As they’re on the way to Mecca? As they gather together in the mosque on the floor? Does it look like a real religion of joy?” Jones says in the YouTube video. “No, to me it looks like a religion of the devil.”

Jones also said he has written a book titled “Islam is of the Devil”, and that the church sells coffee mugs and shirts featuring the phrase.

The stance of the church can only breed hatred among Muslim and Christians. It is worthwhile that already, Muslim and Christian  groups in America have  launched a protest against the planned event, which, if allowed to take place, will breed violence..

The National Association of Evangelicals (NAE) issued a statement urging the church to cancel the event, warning it could exacerbate worldwide tension between the two religions.

“The NAE calls on its members to cultivate relationships of trust and respect with our neighbours of other faiths. God created human beings in his image, and therefore all should be treated with dignity and respect,” it said.

Another Facebook group with more than 3,100 fans said it stands “against the disrespect and intolerance that these people have for the Muslim people”.

An Islamic advocacy group – Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) – has said it would give out 100,000 copies of the Quran to local, state and national leaders, in a bid to educate the public during the month-long fast of Ramadan, which begins today.

“American Muslims and other people of conscience should support positive educational efforts to prevent the spread of Islamophobia,” CAIR spokesman Ibrahim Hooper said.

Though reactions trailing the protest is that of condemnation, with claims that it would only escalate more tensions between the two faiths, the church is determined to continue with the religious protest as it claims it gained a lot of endorsements on its Facebook page.

The organisers of the planned September 11 bonfire must call it off in the name and love of Jesus Christ. It’s important we emphasise, here, what the name and love of Jesus Christ represents. Whatever step the church chooses to take should be motivated by love and not contempt or revenge or to be seen by some as creating some form of religious enmity. The holy books and our supreme model, Jesus Christ teaches love amidst hostility, tribulations and persecutions. Even when, in practical human terms, it seems impossible to practise such divine instructions, total dependence on God to help our weak human  nature and all its devious tendencies should be sought. Does it mean despite the malicious, evil and dastardly terror attacks (religiously, socially or politically motivated) all over the world that have inflicted so much pain, grief and deep sorrow on families, we should just fold our hands and look on? Can the Christian American forgive the Al Qaeda group, headed by the ever elusive Osama bin Laden, that wreaked the havoc of 9/11? Can the victims of the tragic 9/11 incident ever forgive those that inflicted an everlasting wound in their hearts forever? Can the American grip let go of the Afghanistan throat? These are real hard questions to be answered.

Reprisal attacks by an aggrieved group always follow violence perpetrated by another group. Recall the violent consequences that trailed the publication of a comical representation of Prophet Mohammed by a Danish newspaper, Jyllands Posten, the world over.

The point here is not for Christians to be seen as a body that incites any form of religious upheaval that would, most frequently, spread beyond control and in the end claim innocent lives, but a group of people that devoutly represents love and, by choice, co-exist in peace amidst religious provocations.

The Dove World Outreach Centre should obey the biblical injunction of not rendering evil for evil or rage for rage. The church  should heed this biblical injunction. For the Christian to align to this biblical truth is proof of his total submission and commitment to God, which in the real sense is not easy, humanly speaking. The holy Bible charges that whatever battle the Christian is involved in, it’s not his but the Lord’s. God’s exalted and supreme position can never be taken by any mortal. So if He’s not Lord of all, He is not Lord at all. God should be allowed to reign, supremely, in the life of a Christian. God represents love and so must the church. Any form of action or reaction, that would incite violence would be a contradiction to this view.

In this light, I join fellow christians across the world who share the same view, and appeal to Pastor Terry Jones to sheath their swords and let peace reign.

  1. Alhamdulillah, i like it when people speak their mind, i like it more when what they speak make sense. There is one thing i will always like people that care to listen to know, i will like us to study the differences between Human and Religion? is there anything wrong in seeking for knowledge? Who ever supports the burning of the HOLY QURAN is not a problem. For the ignorant people, i beg u before u join the Pastor Terry Jones campaign take a translated copy of THE HOLY BOOK take ur time read like you read ur normal books while u were in school if at all u went to one after u are done then u can go ahead and start to burn that same copy u have. May the Good Lord guide u as u read the The ”QURAN”. Pastor Terry Jones need not to announce the burning of the ”QURAN” he should go ahead do what he got to do and lets see what the almighty God has in stock for him .Allahu Akbar .

  2. “American Muslims and other people of conscience should support positive educational efforts to prevent the spread of Islamophobia,”

I have heard conspiracy theories claiming that the so-called ‘bird-flu’ was an invention of the pharmacy industry to increase sales.

Inventing ‘islamophobia’ as an illness only to be cured by submission to islam sounds far more likely, strange though that it is believed by so many.

  3. You got the right idea Sylvanus that violence begets violence. You are however asking for people to be tolerant of intolerance and that is called cowardace.

There is no god and the sooner we figure this out as a group the sooner we can be on the path of living spiritual lives where we, the people, take care of each other instead of all the fighting and BSing about which god and what “He” wants us to do.

We should all be for burning the Korans and Bibles but remember to save a few for the museums where they belong.

  4. Burn it, let them know that not all westerners will appease their dirty religion. In fact some will do the exact opposite.

I’m an atheist so I don’t believe turning ones cheek will do any good.

  5. Perhaps the author of this article can consider the problem of Islam a bit more deeply and see that rather than an unwarranted provocation, the burning of Korans is in fact an act of love toward those people who are presently enslaved in Islam. To the extent that any Christian actually believes the bible and the accounts of the life and death of Jesus, it is at that point a fact that Islam is false, that it is true that those who follow Islam will end up in Hell. Alternatively, if Islam is true, then Christ as described in the bible is false, Christianity is false, and anyone relying solely on Christ for their salvation will be deeply disappointed on Judgment Day and find themselves in Hell having failed to take up the sword of Muhammad and fight the Jihad against Christianity and Judaism in the name of Islam for Allah. It is not good enough to just shrug our shoulders or rub our hands together in mock concern, if the bible is true, if our faith is not in vain, then we owe it to Muslims to warn them that the Koran and Islam are false, that they are heading for great danger if they don’t find a way to leave Islam and accept Christ. Pretending otherwise, trying to make nice, just in order to maintain peace in this world (that is, to avoid being attacked by evil Muslims) rather than directly confronting the problems with Islam, and making sure everyone knows that the Koran is false, false, false, even if that includes burning the Koran as a demonstration of the absolutely true fact that the Koran is false, and that it is idolized by Muslims (note their reaction to it being burned or even just torn or even just criticized.) Any group of Christians willing to go through with this sort of demonstration should be applauded for their great courage not condemned for some imagined intolerance. Any Christian who is not intolerant of the Koran is clearly confused and has not the first clue what the Koran actually says. Jesus himself will destroy Mecca and the Al Aqsa mosque when he returns along with all of the Korans littering the world. Saying that evil is good cannot be accepted. Isiah 5:20.

  6. it always baffle me when people with high level of civilization stillcontinue to associate issue that are more political in nature with Islam. Islam as it implies means peace and therefore does not tolerate violence.I will personally advise the organisers of the so called upcoming event not to desist but rather go ahead so that we would all bear witness of what the consequence will be. I dont know if any group or individual has ever done this publicly in the past but i can bet it with anyone that whosoever try to do so will perish with immediate effect. Lets just wait and see.

    • Enough with the taquiya already, Islam does not mean peace, it means as you well know, submission.
And that is the very essence of the problem the West faces. Muslims believe there will be no peace until all the world submits to the will of Allah. Well unfortunately for you there are many of us who will never willingly submit. Many of us would rather die resisting the evil that is Islam than allow our children to be enslaved in its mindless embrace.
      “Bring it on.”

    • It is funny how in one sentence you try to say that islam means peace and does not tolerate violence and then in the next sentences ask that the event go ahead so that everyone can see the “consequences” and that the people will surely “perish.” You are admitting that violence will occur, that muslims will attempt to kill the people involved – in order to prove that islam is peace and does not tolerate violence. It is exactly because this is how Muslims think and act that the koran must be burned, mosques destroyed, and the entire religion of islam and the life of muhammad exposed, ridiculed, discredited, eliminated from any acceptance in any form in the civilized world.

  7. I think the position taken by the NAE is the right one. The Dove World Outreach church should rescind on its plan to burn d Quaran. I say this not because of any genuine reason to support the existence of Islam but for the sake of peace to reign. I know & have experienced it, that Islam is full of violent teachings. Though must of the negative teachings are not from the Quoran but from the hadith, which is the works of Islamic contributors like sheik Ibm Abdullah & co. Even some of our Islamic leaders in nigeria, such as the other Uztazz in Abuja that came on NTA Tuesday Live program some few years back to confess that Islam is a non forgiving religion that practices the rule of Teeth for Tat, when asked by Tony Iredia that ”why too much violence by muslims” .

It’s better to tow the path of wisdom and allow the sleeping wild animal sleep. God shall surely punish every soul that killeth.

  8. May the good lord bless u Silvanus Nwafor, I say a yes to this and I join you to kick against what Pastor Terry Jones have on mind.
He most let God fight the battle, cos the battle belongs to the Lord . Pastor Jones most be stop now. Our help is in the name of the Lord.
