A 20-year old jobless man, Ifeanyi Nwadiche, who allegedly stole a set of glass cups, valued at N6,800, was on Thursday granted bail in the sum of N20,000.

Magistrate Mukaila Fadeyi of the Surulere Chief Magistrate’s Court, Lagos, before whom the accused was arraigned, also asked for a surety in like sum.

Nwadiche had pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Idowu Onime, told the court that the accused, with a man now at large, on June 6 conspired and entered a shop and stole a set of glass cups, valued at N6,800.

He said that the accused and his accomplice entered the shop with the pretext of buying some items but while the shop attendant was trying to assist them, made away with the item.

He said Nwadiche was accosted by some people when the shop attendant raised an alarm.

“The accused could not give any reasonable defence on how he got the set of cups or provide any receipt for what he claimed to have bought,’’ Onime said.

The prosecutor said the offence took place at 46, Raufu Williams Crescent, off Adelabu St., Surulere, Lagos.

He said that the offence contravened Sections 516 and 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State and punishable with seven years imprisonment.

Further hearing in the case was adjourned to Aug. 21.
