A man displaying a fake festering cancerous left hand to extort money from unsuspecting sympathisers have been arrested in Lagos, Nigeria.

The man who identified himself as Peter Odiase, alias Igwe, was arrested at Oluwaga junction in Ayobo-Ipaja Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State by the Coordinator of the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) in the area, Mr.Moses Ogunsona.

Luck ran out on Peter who confirmed that he had been in the act for over three months, when he begged for alms from the KAI coordinator, telling him that the “cancerous” hand resulted from a commercial motorcycle (Okada) accident he had sometime last year.

The unsuspecting KAI coordinator reportedly pitied the trickster and gave him N100, only to notice the smart move of the man after he collected the money.

To confirm his fears, the KAI coordinator offered to assist Peter with a free medical treatment at the LCDA’s health centre and the trickster fell for it.

Says an eyewitness, “when the suspect was taken to the KAI office at Ipaja and was searched, we discovered that nothing was wrong with him, he was perfectly alright.

Peter Odiase who claims to be 35 years and married with two boys said he lives along Command Road, near Meiran in Agbado-Oke-Odo LCDA.

He was later taken to the Ayobo-Ipaja LCDA secretariat at Igbogila where the chairman, Prince Bisi Yusuf, expressed  shock on the man’s trick, but expressed satisfaction that the trickster was exposed by the council’s decision to help the less privileged through its free health programme.

According to the chairman, who later personally handed the suspect to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), of Ipaja Police Division, Mr. Okezie said: “If Mr. Ogunsona had not offered to help the fake beggar with our free health programme which he fell for, he would not have been arrested.
