3 Million Trees For Lagos

Lagos State government in pursuit of its vision of planting 3 million trees will hold the second anniversary of the tree planting campaign at various centres across the state.

The exercise, which was scheduled for 14 July, 2010, will be led by the state governor Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola at the LASU Road Junction, Isheri in Alimosho Local Government Area.

According to the programme released by the state government, the First Lady, Mrs. Abimbola Fashola will perform the planting at the Ifako- Ijaye Local Government Area while the Deputy Governor Princess Sarah Sosan and Special Adviser Hon. Sesan Olanrewaju will plant trees at Ikorodu and Epe respectively.

Top Government functionaries such as members of the State Executive Council, members of the national and state assemblies, local government chairmen, royal fathers, captains of industries, religious leaders, educational institutions, trade groups, private sectors, actors, media and environment ambassadors have also been assigned to the 57 Local Government Areas and LCDAs and various other designated centres such as  tertiary institutions, military and para-military formations and markets, to partake at the event.

In addition, other advocacy programmes such as the establishment of Climate Change Club in Lagos Schools, Climate Change Summit, World Wetland Day and World Earth Day celebrations are expected to create a culture of planting trees for protection and sustenance of the environment.

During the celebration, three members of the Climate Change Club who excelled in the “Me and My Tree” competition by nursing the trees they adopted during the last year planting anniversary to appreciable heights, will be presented to the governor.
