As the nation intensify preparations to celebrate 50 years of independence, leaders in the country have been urged to engage in soul searching instead of rolling out drums to mark the event.

While urging the nation’s political leaders to be sober and reflective, an activist, Dr. Tuyi Mebawondu-Olowu, noted that political leaders in the country have not provided ideal good governance that will take Nigeria to greater heights.

According to the medical practitioner who is the Executive Director, Doctors for Human Rights in Nigeria, DHRIN, millions of Nigerians are yet to enjoy dividends of democracy.

Urging President Goodluck Jonathan not to allow himself to be deceived by praise singers and political jobbers, the activist implored the president to take the bull by the horns by embarking on radical changes that will transform the nation.

“Jonathan should pay a special attention to corruption. This is the hydra-headed monster that is slowing down Nigeria’s progress as a nation. If Jonathan can successfully tame corruption, other things will fall into place,” he declared.

Urging elective political office holders across the country to develop a new orientation towards governance, the activist lamented the unpatriotic attitude of some of the nation’s political leaders would make Nigeria founding fathers turn in their graves.
