Lagos Inter-Tertiary Games: Mixed Fortunes For UNILAG At Volleyball Event

It was mixed fortunes for the University of Lagos, UNILAG at the finals of the volleyball event in the ongoing Lagos Inter-Tertiary Games.

While the female team of the UNILAG made a good defence of the cup they won in the last edition of the games, the male team of the school were beaten in the final played at the UNILAG Sports Complex, Akoka, Yaba, Lagos, Nigeria yesterday.

The female team defeated their counterparts from Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, Ijanikin in three straight sets of 25-7, 22-3, 25-15. The male team were not so lucky as they bowed to the fire power of Army School of Finance and Administration 1-3.

The Army boys won the first set 22-25, while the UNILAG team levelled up in the second set, 25-22. The Army boys were too much for the team from Akoka as they (UNILAG team) fell in the remaining two sets, 20-25, 19-25.

The chairman of the Games’ Main Organising Committee, MOC, Prince ‘Wale Oladunjoye, who is the Senior Special Assistant on Grassroots Sports Development to Governor Raji Fashola ,described the finals of the Volleyball event as a testimony that there are talents  across the higher institutions in the state.

“These talents are waiting to be discovered. This is the essence of this championship, which Governor Fashola really believe will go a long way to develop sports in Lagos,” he said.

Meanwhile, the finals of the basketball event will come up at the Yaba College of Technology, Yaba, Lagos this evening. The tourney ends on Saturday, 3 July, 2010.
