The 50th anniversary celebration of the coronation of the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Dr. Sikiru Kayode Adetona, Ogbagba II, commenced today with Woro dance around Ijebu-Ode, South West Nigeria by market men and women from across Ijebuland.
As a mark of respect for the paramount ruler of Ijebuland, all markets in the area, comprising six local government areas, were shut.
The Woro dance was led by the Iyaloja of Ijebuland, Alhaja Alimotu Elewuju and the Babaloja, Alhaji Tunmbi Kaka.
The dancers proceeded from the Ipebi ground to the palace of Awujale where they showered prayers on the monarch.
The large crowd later moved in a convoy to the palace of Olisa of Ijebuland, Chief Rasheed Adesanya.
In an interview with P.M.NEWS, Adesanya commended Oba Adetona for his leadership role which had made Ijebuland to be peaceful and united.
According to the Olisa, “Kabiyesi has been a father to all and sundry in Ijebuland since his ascension to the throne of his forefathers. I wish him a successful golden jubilee anniversary.â€
Adesanya said he arrived Ijebu from the U.K. yesterday to join other sons and daughters of Ijebuland to felicitate with the monarch.
The dancers later moved to the residence of other important dignitaries in the town.
The other activities lined up for the anniversary include interdenominational service on Sunday, re-naming of the popular Ejirin road, Ijebu-Ode after Oba Adetona, and unveiling of the monarch’s statue at the local government secretariat.
Also Awujale descendants from Port Novo, Republic of Benin will pay homage to the Oba.
Next Friday, a jumat service will hold at the Ijebu-Ode Central Mosque, while the grand finale on Saturday will feature a book launch and a get-together.
