Nigerians have been told to be wary of retired General Ibrahim Babangida’s recent antics calling for the immortalisation of the winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, late Chief MKO Abiola.
Speaking with P.M.NEWS in Lagos after a programme organised by his group to commemorate the June 12, 1993 presidential election anniversary, the National Coordinator of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), Otunba Gani Adams, described Babangida’s statement as a political one meant to draw sympathy towards his drive for the 2011 presidency.
“Babangida is seeking political sympathy and he is behaving like the normal politician. He is trying to attract sympathy for his ambition to rule this country again. People like Babangida should not be taken seriously. They want to take Nigerians on another merry go round that will take us to nowhere,†he warned.
Otunba Adams called on the Federal Government to refurbish national monuments like the National Stadium in Lagos and name it after Chief Abiola.
The OPC National Coordiantor expressed happiness that many states and groups are now celebrating the June 12 anniversary, stating that if not for the OPC which decided in 2001 to mark the anniversary yearly, it would have been forgotten by now.
He called on government to consider naming one of the international airports in the country after Chief Abiola to immortalise the name of the late philanthropist and politician.
