Upsets At CBN Open, As Seeded Olawepo, Aba Crash Out

The ongoing 32nd Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN Senior Tennis Open Championship is living up to its billing as the tourney recorded two major upsets in second round matches played at the tennis courts of the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, Nigeria yesterday.

Number 9 seed in the Men’s Singles, Bolaji Olawepo was no match to unseeded Thomas Otu, who had a smooth ride to the quarter final of the competition in straight sets of 6-4, 6-3.Chidinma Aba, number 2 seed in the Women’s Singles was also a shadow of herself when she was upset by a rookie, Biodun Akinwole. Aba had an upper hand in the first set, 6-4, but she fell flat in the last two sets 4-6, 4-6.

In other results of the second round matches decided yesterday, Abdulmumini Babalola had a smooth ride over US based Ras 1 in a game that ended 6-4, 3-0 before Ras 1 retired, Shehu Lawal beat Aliyu Umar 6-2, 6-0, Sunday Emmanuel got the best out of Adebisi Olalekan in straight sets of 6-0, 6-3, while Monday Igbinovia defeated Musa Bala  4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to qualify for the quarter final of the Men’s Singles which will be played tomorrow.

The likes of Fatimo Abinu, Christy Agugbom, Abiola Akewula and Anu Aiyegbusi will play in the Women’s Singles quarter final matches today, having scaled their respective hurdles in the second round.

The tournament ends on Saturday.
