Senate Approves New Salary For NASS Staff

The Senate on Wednesday approved more than N11 billion for the payment of a Consolidated Salary Structure for the National Assembly staff.

The amount represents 100 percent increase in salary for workers of the National Assembly.

Presenting the report of the Committee on Establishment and Public Service, the Chairman, Sen. Mohammed Ahmad, said the increment showed an increase of N1.9 billion above the total current payroll for core National Assembly staff.

From the recommendation, the National Assembly Service Commission got an increase of N160 million above its current figure of N277 million, bringing the total proposed recommended payroll cost to N437 million.

The Bill has also increased the legislative aides current payroll cost of N3.5 billion by N2.6 billion bringing it to a total proposed payroll cost of N6 billion.

The Senate, however, said that only 50 percent of the recommended pay package would be paid while the balance of 50 percent would be spread over a period of eight years.

The implementation is, however, subject to harmonisation of the salary structure with the House of Representatives.

The proposed salary structure if implemented, will see Grade Level 02 officer earning monthly pay of about N32,034.66 while a GL 08 will earn N104,984.40.

Also on Wednesday, the Bill seeking to alter the 1999 constitution for the establishment of the National Industrial Court passed through second reading in the Senate.

Leading debate on the Bill, Deputy Senate leader, Sen. Victor Ndoma-Egba (SAN), said the National Assembly was duty bound to solidify and consolidate the court by expressly, clearly and directly, including it in section six and other relevant sections of the constitution.

The Senate also passed the Hydro Electric Power Producing Areas Development Commission Bill 2010.
