Chairman of Nsukka Local Government Area in Enugu State, Nigeria, Mr. Tony Ugwu on Wednesday took three hours to teach pupils of a primary school in various subjects.

Ugwu said the exercise was part of activities to mark this year’s Children’s Day celebration and also to give a sense of belonging to children in the area.

The chairman, who arrived at the school around 9.35 a.m. made straight for the Primary One classroom where he taught the pupils English Language.

He later went to Primary Two to teach Social Studies.

He expressed appreciation with the level of intelligence displayed by the pupils who answered his questions correctly, urging them to keep it up.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the chairman asked questions on the name of the president of Nigeria, the name of the governor of Enugu State and the name of the chairman of Nsukka LGA.

Other areas he drilled the pupils included the past tense of go, the opposite of good, and beautiful, among other things.

The chairman advised the pupils to study hard as to become useful citizens of the country.

“Read your books so that you will become president, governor, LG chairman, doctor, lawyer, engineer and journalist in future,” he said.

Ugwu commended the teachers for their hard work in ensuring proper teaching and moral discipline which he said was responsible for pupil’s good and orderly behaviour.

He pledged to give immediate attention to their requests, stressing that the administration was committed to ensuring quality education for the children.

Earlier, Mrs. Augustina Onyia, the Headmistress of the school, urged the council to fence the school to avoid motorcyclists using its premises as a thoroughfare, noting that they had many times knocked down pupils.
