Executive Chairman of Ibeju Lekki Local Government, Lagos, Nigeria, Prince Bayo Balogun, has said that the success recorded by Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola in sports development in Lagos State is a challenge to him.
Prince Balogun, whose local government won the recently concluded Lagos Sports Festival, tagged IBILE 2010 with 99 gold, 86 silver and 65 bronze medals, said the secret behind his council’s success in sports since he assumed office is due to commitment and dedication.
The council’s cricket team, Ibeju Lekki Cricket Club, ILLC, also won the National Cricket Club Championship twice, while five of the club’s players are in the national team. The council has also been chosen as the camp base of Nigeria’s beach soccer team by the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, while teams from the LG have also made a mark in football tourneys, female soccer, secondary school athletics competition and table tennis.
“The success of Governor Fashola in the area of sports development at the state level has always spurred me to do something good for my area not only in sports but all aspects of life,†Balogun told P.M.Sports. “I cannot run away from following the footsteps of Governor Fashola who has been a good example. That’s why Ibeju Lekki gives priority to developing sports and the results are the achievements we have recorded in the past few years, especially at the Sports Festival where we, the rejected stone, turned out to be the cornerstone of the building.â€
Balogun said his administration will leave nothing to chance to complement the efforts of the state government in the areas of youth development, discovering and grooming of young talents to promote unity and progress in the local government.
“My appreciation goes to our dynamic sports-loving governor for his efforts in revamping youths and sports in Lagos State and for the wonderful work he is doing to transform Lagos into a Mega City.
