Eagles Assemble In Abuja, Eguavoen Begs Critics

With just three weeks to the kick off of the World Cup in South Africa, Super Eagles skipper Nwankwo Kanu and his  colleagues have started arriving in Abuja ahead of their send forth reception slated for tomorrow and Thursday.

Portmouth’s Kanu, who played for less than 10 minutes in last weekend’s English FA Cup final match against double champions, Chelsea is expected to check into the Eagles’ camp in Abuja this evening.

Also expected in camp are the Uche brothers, Ike and Kalu, John Utaka and his younger brother, Peter, Osaze Odemwingie,       Taye Taiwo of Olympic Marseille, goalkeepers Vincent Enyeama, Dele Aiyenugba and Austin Ejide as well as other players.

The two players invited from the Globacom Premier League, goalkeeper Akpan Bassey of Bayelsa United and Lobi Stars’ Terna Suswan are to join the 30-man squad invited by Eagles manager, Lars Lagerback. The new coach will address the players for the first time in Abuja tomorrow before Thursday’s Presidential send forth reception.

The Eagles are billed to leave for London immediately after the reception to begin their preparation for the World Cup in South Africa.

During their training camp in London, the Nigerian team are to play an international friendly match against Colombia at the Upton Park, West Ham’s ground.

The team would also play tune up games against Saudi Arabia and North Korea before heading for South Africa, where Nigeria plays her opening match against Argentina on 12 June.

Meanwhile, assistant coach of the Eagles, Austin Eguavoen has said that criticism won’t help the Nigerian team in the World Cup. The former international said Nigerians should begin to think positively about the Eagles as this would motivate the players to do the nation proud at the Mundial
