Information Minister, Dora Akunyili, has thrown her weight behind the World Wrestling Professional (WWP) Commonwealth Champion of Champions Wrestling Championship slated to hold in Nigeria later this year.

Akunyili, who received a delegation of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the Commonwealth Championship, led by its Chairman, J.N Okeke, in her office last week, assured the LOC that her ministry would support the competition as it was in line with Nigeria’s re-branding project.

According to the minister, Nigeria will always support any of its citizens who work to bring glory to the country, adding that the championship is a clear indication that the nation has talented and resourceful youths with the zeal to bring honour to the country.

The minister also presented an endorsement letter to the LOC, while charging it to work towards the success of the championship.

In the letter,  Akunyili wrote: “I wish to endorse and support the WWP Commonwealth Heavyweight Wrestling Champions tournament tagged: The Clash Of Titans: The Last Man Standing.

“The tournament reflects the goals of the Rebranding project of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Nigerian champions, past and present, including our son, De Ultimate Commander, who is currently the Commonwealth Heavyweight Wrestling Champion, are great ambassadors of this nation.

“By this letter, I endorse the tournament and invite the good people of Nigeria to buy into and support this laudable venture,” Akunyili stated.

Earlier in his speech, WWP President, Mark Beale, had told the minister that he believed Nigeria’s large population also means that there were enormous untapped talents, who could become the base for the growth of wrestling in Africa.

He disclosed that at least 42 wrestlers of different categories will be in Nigeria for the one month long Commonwealth Wrestling show, Beale thanked the minister for recognising the contributions of its wrestlers to the national image.
