In this generation of smart phone kids, internet, fast cars, clubbing and parties, it’s awe inspiring to find a teenager with lofty ideas and a positive mindset. 14-year old Ayeronwi Oluwatosin is one teenager doing great things.

Tosin as she’s fondly called at home and at school is indeed a girl of many parts. She is a super talented and super gifted young lady with limitless ambitions and dreams of being a world class fashion stylist, painter, celebrity and entrepreneur.

•Tosin

•Tosin

Personality-wise, she’s fun loving, comfortable, shy, intelligent and focused. However when it comes to her passion which is arts (fashion and painting), she’s super creative, focused and very determined to get to the very top.

“I love fashion as it is, because I feel it’s a way you express yourself, culture and what you love, and I find fashion as a way of getting away from people, it makes me happy as person to be able to do stuffs I love,” she said.

Like every other industry, the fashion industry is growing and it’s growing at an alarming rate too. And little Tosin has this to say about the growth.

“I feel it’s blowing up, people are stepping out of their comfort zone doing what they love, incorporating Ankara designs, and I can see myself growing with the trend too,” she enthused.

A visit to her studio where she designs at her parents’ home unveils yet another creative part of Tosin.

She draws and is quite good at it too. Her drawings cut across still life to abstracts that are simply best understood by her.

Her words: “Each drawing represents my personality. I am a teenager, so I always try to incorporate designs that people would love to wear. Designs that are fun and entertaining, I pick designs that are honest to my nature about what I do, I also like sophisticated designs that stands out, it makes you look modern and trendy”. As a budding painter, Tosin said: “I love painting, it’s also a way I express myself. It means different things to different people, but I just love the way it feels. When you paint you are able to express yourself”.

As the saying goes, the future belongs to those who dream and pursue their dreams, and for Tosin, she foresees a brighter future.

“In the very near future, I’ll be showing off my talent to the world. First of all, I’ll need to finish up my school and then start up my fashion business. I can see myself as a top celebrity in Nigeria and all over the world. I want people to notice and recognize my work when they see them,” she summed.

Bukola Smart, a 17-year-old Nigerian student based in the United Kingdom, is set to make a big impact in Nigeria’s fashion and music scene with the establishment of The Fashion and Music Entertainment, FAME 2014 concert, a creative initiative designed to encourage the continuous growth and development of the Nigerian entertainment and fashion industry.

Set to debut in December 2014 in Lagos, FAME is a blend of fashion and music on the runway and it is designed to showcase and encourage the abundant talent and human resources in the country’s music and fashion industry and more importantly, to discover the next generation of stars in the music and fashion business.

Smart, who is studying Accounting and Finance in the University of Reading and a long term fashion enthusiast, said the objective of the project is to promote fashion and support growth in the music industry by discovering talents who can stand the test of time.

“Fashion and music are always a great blend as we have seen in many different concerts, but the difference is that FAME brings exclusivity, style and class to the business. It gives the participants not only a chance to show what they do best, but gives them the opportunity to be scouted or recruited to kick off a bright career. Therefore, FAME will serve as a platform of career opportunities and brings about the reality of dreams,” she said.

Smart disclosed that entry forms for the event have been on sale from 14 July and applications would be made in two categories  —fashion and music. Submitted applications would be thoroughly scrutinized and successful applicants short-listed for training/audition which would be the utmost pre-condition for qualification into the finals of the event.

The training and audition sessions would entail all short-listed applicants both in fashion and music categories converging daily at a designated location where instructors for training and rehearsals would engage them.

Designed in the form of a reality show, contestants in the fashion category would be judged based on originality, creativity, modelling skills, style and modernization, while those in the music category would be judged on lyrics, beat, originality, audibility, and delivery.

Ten (best five in each of the two categories) would converge at the grand finale where the winner of the star prize would be chosen.

Segun Bankole, AGM, Corporate Communications and Branding, Sovereign Trust Insurance, sponsor of the show, said the company is taking part in the event because it is in tandem with their corporate values of innovation, integrity, professionalism and team spirit. He said Bukkie Smart represents such innovative youth and they are proud to be associated with her.

Emmanuel Ikubese: Mr Nigeria 2014

Emmanuel Ikubese, was on Saturday night crowned ‘Mr Nigeria 2014″ at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Victoria Island, Lagos.

Ikubese, a 25-year old actor, got a car, a modelling contract, N1 million prize money and the opportunity to represent Nigeria at the “Mr World” contest in the Netherlands later this year.

He had to shrug off 19 other contestants to emerge winner of the annual contest, organised by the Silverbird Group. The event featured stage appearances in different outfits and performances by the 20 contestants.

The contestants appeared on stage in different attires and gave different artistic performances before being reduced to 10.

The hosts then took them through a question and answer routine before they reduced the group of 10 to five.

Austine Igwilo and Michael Amilo clinched the first and second-runner up positions respectively.

Ikubese said he would use his new position to be a good role model and to inspire millions of youths and encourage them to chase their dreams.

“I am currently part of a campaign against HIV/AIDS and I will also do my own projects. One of them is the fight against domestic violence because I have come across a lot of such violence in the news in recent times.

“The case of the man who stabbed his wife 72 times got to me and I decided to take it up. We are Africans and we are honourable men and beating our women is never a sign of our strength.”

Ikubese added that: “I want to get us talking about God-given innate African qualities again and encourage our men to be real men.”

Ikubese who studied International Relations at the United States International University, Nairobi, Kenya, hails from Kwale in Delta State.

In an angry tweet directed at the 12 Years A Slave star, she wrote: ‘Oh @Lupita_Nyongo cln’t talk abt the bleaching creams white people (Companies) make cuz the white man pays her, they own her!! [sic]‘.

The comment comes just a month after Miss Nyong’o mentioned Dencia – who has been accused of marketing her own brand of skin-bleaching cream called Whitenicious – in a speech about learning to value the color of her own skin.

The pop star is no stranger to controversy; in a February interview with Ebony, she all but admitted that Whitenicious is intended as a skin-lightener, not as a cure for dark spots as it claims.

‘When you take that picture and you put a picture of Dencia darker, this is what you’re telling people – the product really works,’ she said.

‘And guess what? People really want to buy it. It’s what it is. I don’t really care.’

Given her defiant and hypocritical attitude, it’s no surprise the fiery singer was angered when Miss Nyong’o called her out in a speech at Essence’s Black Women in Hollywood event on February 27.

Stella Ralfini from London said semen facials hold the key to her eternal youth.

‘It’s worth thousands and thousands, but it’s free,’ she explains in a YouTube video.

‘All you need is a lover but if you don’t have one, you know what to do. All you need to do is, every ten days or two weeks, just both have a good time, make sure he has a good time, and when your beautiful love-making session is over, you are going to scoop this amazing sperm mask up in your fingers, put it on your face, leave it for fifteen minutes and wash it off.’

She goes on: ”I know some of you are thinking “What is she saying?!” but we have to assume that your lover is a healthy clean man and eats wells.

British Stella, who describes herself as an author, life coach, couples counsellor and tantric guide, explains that she learned the bizarre anti-ageing trick during her time in India, where she was studying a lovemaking method called Tantra. She said she learned the trick from a woman in her sixties, who still looked youthful.

She said she has been using the sperm cream for 30 years.

My Life As Beauty Queen http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2014/02/28/my-life-as-beauty-queen/ http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2014/02/28/my-life-as-beauty-queen/#comments Fri, 28 Feb 2014 16:42:54 +0000 http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/?p=187189 Miss Genevieve Anaele was crowned the  beauty queen of Environment And Sanitation in Eko, Miss MBGE Environment, on 27 October and till next year, the number two queen under the registered trade mark, Most Beautiful Girl In Eko, MBGE, will use the platform to realise her childhood dream, which include helping the less privileged in the society and creating awareness about modern child slavery through her pet projects. Genevieve speaks on her life as a beauty queen.

How has life been since you were crowned queen?

Although I have been restricted from being at certain places and doing some certain things differently, my life has been good as a  beauty queen. It has been a new experience for me.

What have you been doing since then?

I won the crown in October. , last year. So, I haven’t really been on any tour. But I had been invited  for Face of Edo beauty pageant in Edo State in November, 2013. I was also at  the tenth anniversary of AfricaMagic and Ikeja City Awards in December. I am going on a tour of Ghana in May, this year.

Miss Genevieve: Crowned the Beauty Queen of Environment And Sanitation in Eko.

Miss Genevieve: Crowned the Beauty Queen of Environment And Sanitation in Eko.

Is this your definition of success?

Success to me is achieving my goals. It’s also about making my life better than what it was previously. Material assets are not a measure of success. How you feel after achieving your goal should be the sole measure of your success. Being Miss MBGE Environment has opened doors for me and it is also giving me the opportunity to achieve my dreams.

What are your dreams?

One of my dreams that is yet to be realised is being able to help the less privileged in the society. But I know that it is achievable now because  of the pet project that I am working on at the moment. It will soon be made public, when evertything is set.

Does it has to do with the girl child and what is your view about it?

For me,  child labor, human trafficking and prostitution among the girl child are a serious crime against humanity. The government must act fast and look for an effective way to put an end to these vices, which I call modern day slavery.

What is the motivating  factor?

Genevieve is a nice, intelligent and easy-going young lady who  aims to  become a respected personality in the society. I want to contribute to the growth of this country, by affecting lives positively. My growing up was fun because I got everything I wanted as a child. I am the first child and we are just five in the family. My dad is into building constructions and my mum  is a business woman. So I grew up in a healthy enviroment and I wish the same for every Nigerian child who is the future of this country.

How do you relax?

I relax more with my friends and family. I also love  watching movies and reading.

What next after this?

I plan to participate in the next Most Beautiful Girl In Nigeria,  MBGN or Miss Capital City Nigeria, MCCN, that would be organised by  Ereon Pageantry Nigeria. It’s a national pageant of all the 36 capital cities in Nigeria. I also plan to further my education because I dont think I can achieve any of my goals in life without being educated.

And I appeal to Nigerians to  stop stereotyping beauty pageant as a bad thing. It is a way of  promoting  tourism, beauty and culture of the country it is being organised.

Less than three weeks after Nigerian international model, Oluchi Onweagba-Orlandi launched a series of attacks on Twitter and called her fellow Africans animals, she, on Friday 8 November, re-enacted her saucy side as she insulted a group of journalists who were at the premiere of her new show, Africa’s Next Top Model.

Oluchi, who was the chief hostess at the weekend event held at Pravada Lounge on Victoria Island, Lagos, created an ugly drama as she snubbed the media reps who had asked to be treated well after being made to stand while others were on their seats during the delayed press conference.

P.M.NEWS Showbiz Trends gathered that the whole drama started after the model, who came far late into the event, caused the organisers to move the earlier scheduled media briefing into the noisy main hall of the night club.

And of course, the journalists were not comfortable with the arrangement considering the boisterous crowd and noise.

After about three questions and her impolite responses, the newsmen stopped  asking questions. Oluchi sensed their coldness and then asked if there were further questions, to which one of the journalists expressed disgust over the humiliation they had been subjected to.

Rather than apologise, Oluchi angrily muttered: “I am only here to party and not to be answering questions.” And she walked away leaving the angry journalists in the middle of the club. When the organisers went to confer with her, she remained adamant.

Even when the whole scenario was reported to the  publisher of a fashion and lifestyle magazine, and our correspondent was invited to iron out the matter, Oluchi threw caution to the winds when she told the reporter, “Don’t touch me please,” when she was about to be stopped from walking away for the second time.

“Oluchi should be world class…she should be able to control herself in public no matter how upset she is. It’s called anger management,” said a concerned guest who observed the drama at the event.

P.M.NEWS Showbiz Trends learnt that Oluchi has a record of bad temperament and is said to be hostile to journalists. That was what manifested when she threw caution to the winds with her recent outburst on Twitter.

Her series on Twitter read: “I am disgusted. DISGUSTED by human behaviour…Africans be like “no funds no meetings”… MONEY is not the root of evil. “Greedy Humans” are the root of evil… Hopefully I won’t throw up soon. Bunch of inconsiderate animals!!!!…They know price tag of everything and the VALUE of nothing!!!…Incompetent idiots. Ugly souls. Monsters in human forms!…They won’t let me enjoy my beauty sleep!”

And she got a lot of bashing for her coarse tweets.

One Akindele wrote then: “This girl is just a fool…so because you marry Oyibo now, folks back home are now ‘Africans’? Shame, a Nigerian should be propagating this sort of ignorance.

Can’t she just say ‘These guys’ or even be specific? But she would rather tar all Africans, feeding into stereotypes of racists around her. Nonsense, is Africa one country? How many Africans have she met? Village girl made into Face of Africa.”

Miss Philippines new Miss World, Miss Ghana third http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2013/09/28/miss-philippines-new-miss-world-miss-ghana-third/ http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2013/09/28/miss-philippines-new-miss-world-miss-ghana-third/#comments Sat, 28 Sep 2013 15:26:42 +0000 http://pmnewsnigeria.com/?p=173228 NUSA DUA, Indonesia (AFP) – Miss Philippines was Saturday crowned Miss World 2013 in a glittering finale on the Indonesian resort island of Bali amid tight security following weeks of hardline Muslim protests.

Some 127 contestants took to the stage Saturday for the final and they were quickly whittled down to six. France came in second and Ghana was third.

As hundreds of Muslim hardliners held a prayer session in a mosque near the capital to express their anger at the contest, Megan Young wept as she won the coveted title in the final on Hindu-majority Bali.

The 23-year-old, wearing a pearl white gown, promised to be “the best Miss World ever” in front of a cheering crowd in a venue guarded by heavily armed police and water cannons.

Young, who is studying digital media and also presents TV shows in the Philippines, pledged to “just be myself in everything I do, to share what I know and to educate people”.

Organisers will breath a sigh of relief that the finale of the three-week pageant passed off smoothly after thousands of hardliners protested across Indonesia in recent weeks, denouncing the beauty pageant as a “whore contest”.

Some embassies had also alerted their nationals on Bali to the possibility extremists might attack the pageant, a chilling warning on an island where bomb attacks in 2002 killed around 200 people, mostly foreign tourists.

The demonstrations prompted the government to order the entire pageant be moved from the main island of Java to Bali, where it opened on September 8 and there is little radical influence.

Prominent hardline group the Islamic Defenders’ Front (FPI) had pledged to stage fresh protests on Saturday — but, in the end, no demonstrations materialised.

However, hundreds of members from the FPI and other hardline groups gathered for a prayer session in Sentul, just outside the capital Jakarta, to express their opposition to the pageant.

Organisers had originally planned the final in a 10,000-seat venue in Sentul before being forced to move to a 2,000-seat centre in Nusa Dua.

Those at the prayer gathering were addressed by a Muslim preacher who lashed out at the pageant, which radicals claim goes against Islamic teaching, said FPI member Ustad Maman.

“Indonesia has already shown how it feels about Miss World — we rejected it here, we reject it anywhere,” he told AFP

Ita Puspita Lena, local police spokeswoman, said that 200 police were on duty in the area and there were dozens at the mosque.

Maman said that 5,000 FPI members showed up for the prayer session, although police put the figure at 1,000.

FPI members in East Java had pledged to try and cross the narrow stretch of water that separates the province from Bali to protest there — but Maman admitted they had been put off by the tight security.

Almost 700 police were deployed across Bali to provide security for Miss World, backed by traditional Balinese security personnel wearing sarongs and armed with daggers, according to police.

Before the beauty queens took to the stage for Saturday’s final, the audience were treated to a performance by British boy band Blue.

In the weeks leading up to the final, the contestants took part in a series of “challenge” events for which they were awarded points.

These include a “beach fashion” round, which this year saw contestants swap the pageant’s famed bikinis for sarongs in a bid to avoid causing offence in Muslim-majority Indonesia.

The finalists also faced a question-and-answer round from a panel of judges.

A total of 129 contestants had been due to compete in the final but two pulled out at the last minute, according to organisers.

Indonesian muslim hardliners protest Miss World hosting http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2013/09/28/indonesian-muslim-hardliners-protest-miss-world-hosting/ http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2013/09/28/indonesian-muslim-hardliners-protest-miss-world-hosting/#comments Sat, 28 Sep 2013 12:11:56 +0000 http://pmnewsnigeria.com/?p=173215 NUSA DUA, Indonesia (AFP) – Hundreds of Islamic hardliners in Indonesia held a mass prayer session Saturday to express their opposition to Miss World, just before the final of the pageant began on Bali after weeks of protests.

Heavily armed police, some with sniffer dogs, and water cannons were protecting the final venue, as the 129 contestants prepared for the end of the three-week pageant on the resort island, to be broadcast around the world.

Thousands of Islamic radicals have taken to the streets in recent weeks across Indonesia denouncing Miss World as a “whore contest” and “pornography”, and foreign embassies have warned the pageant could be attacked.

Despite an early pledge by organisers to axe the famed bikini round for this year’s contest, hardliners were not appeased and the protest movement snowballed.

The demonstrations prompted the government to order the entire pageant be moved from the main island of Java to Hindu-majority Bali, where it opened on September 8 and where there is little radical influence.

As the contestants geared up to fight it out for the Miss World crown, hundreds of members of hardline group the Islamic Defenders’ Front (FPI) gathered at a mosque in Sentul, just outside the capital Jakarta.

Organisers had originally planned the final in a 10,000-seat venue in Sentul before being forced to move to a 2,000-seat centre in Nusa Dua, southern Bali.

The FPI members took part in a mass prayer session to express their opposition, and were addressed by a speaker who lashed out at the pageant, which radicals state goes against Islamic teaching, said FPI member Ustad Maman.

“Indonesia has already shown how it feels about Miss World — we rejected it here, we reject it anywhere,” he told AFP.

Ita Puspita Lena, local police spokesman, said that 200 police were on duty in the area and there were dozens at the mosque for security.

Maman said that 5,000 FPI members showed up for the prayer session, although police put the figure at 1,000.

However, by early Saturday evening there was no repeat of the major protests that have erupted across the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country in recent weeks.

FPI members in East Java had pledged to try and cross the narrow stretch of water that separates the province from Bali to protest there — but they did not manage to get past the tight security.

“There is a lot of security and it’s been hard to get in,” said Maman.

It was the second time that FPI members have failed to cross to Bali from East Java. Earlier this month, they were stopped at the island’s main port by a line of female police backed by hundreds of elite officers.

Almost 700 police are deployed across Bali to provide security for Miss World, backed by traditional Balinese security personnel wearing sarongs and armed with daggers, according to police.

Adding to security concerns, the American, British and Australian embassies have said the pageant could be targeted by extremists, a chilling warning on an island where bombings in 2002 killed more than 200 people.

However, Nana Putra, executive director of the event’s broadcaster and organiser MNC, told AFP that there had so far been no security concerns.

“We hope there’s no problems and I’m sure we’ll get all the support we need,” she added.

Saturday’s final will last several hours and will see the contestants parade in Indonesian-designed dresses. It will also feature a series of musical performances, including one by British boyband Blue.

The finalists will face a question-and-answer round from a panel of judges before the current Miss World, China’s Yu Wenxia, hands her crown to the new winner.

Nigerian wins Muslim world beauty pageant http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2013/09/18/nigerian-wins-muslim-world-beauty-pageant/ http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2013/09/18/nigerian-wins-muslim-world-beauty-pageant/#comments Wed, 18 Sep 2013 19:05:21 +0000 http://pmnewsnigeria.com/?p=172303 A Nigerian, Obabiyi Aisha Ajibola, tearfully prayed and recited Koranic verses as she won a world beauty pageant exclusively for Muslim women in the Indonesian capital Wednesday, a riposte to the Miss World contest that has sparked hardline anger.

The 20 finalists, who were all required to wear headscarves, put on a glittering show for the final of Muslimah World, strolling up and down a catwalk in elaborately embroidered dresses and stilettos.

But the contestants from six countries were covered from head to foot, and as well as beauty they were judged on how well they recited Koranic verses and their views on Islam in the modern world.

After a show in front of an audience of mainly religious scholars and devout Muslims, a panel of judges picked Obabiyi Aishah Ajibola from Nigeria as the winner.

While the event in a Jakarta shopping mall paled in comparison to Miss World on the resort island of Bali, in which scores of contestants are competing, Ajibola was nevertheless overwhelmed.

Upon hearing her name, the 21-year-old, a student of the University of Lagos, knelt down and prayed, then wept as she recited a Koranic verse.

She said it was “thanks to almighty Allah” that she had won the contest. She received 25 million rupiah ($2,200) and trips to Mecca and India as prizes.

Ajibola told AFP before the final that the event “was not really about competition”.

“We’re just trying to show the world that Islam is beautiful,” she said.

Organisers said the pageant challenged the idea of beauty put forward by the British-run Miss World pageant, and also showed that opposition to the event could be expressed non-violently.

Eka Shanti, who founded the pageant three years ago after losing her job as a TV news anchor for refusing to remove her headscarf, bills the contest as “Islam’s answer to Miss World”.

“This year we deliberately held our event just before the Miss World final to show that there are alternative role models for Muslim women,” she told AFP.

“But it’s about more than Miss World. Muslim women are increasingly working in the entertainment industry in a sexually explicit way, and they become role models, which is a concern.”

Hosted by Dewi Sandra, an Indonesian actress and pop star who recently hung up her racy dresses for a headscarf, the pageant featured both Muslim and pop music performances, including one about modesty, a trait the judges sought in the winner.

The pageant, which also featured bright Indonesian Islamic designer wear, is a starkly different way of protesting Miss World than the approach taken by Islamic radicals.

Snowballing protest movement

Thousands have taken to the streets in Indonesia in recent weeks to protest Miss World, denouncing the contest as “pornography” and burning effigies of the organisers.

Despite a pledge by Miss World organisers to drop the famous bikini round, radical anger was not appeased and the protest movement snowballed.

The government eventually bowed to pressure and ordered the whole pageant be moved to the Hindu-majority island of Bali, where it opened on September 8.

Later rounds and the September 28 final were to be held in and around Jakarta, where there is considerable hardline influence.

But there are still fears that extremists may target the event — the US, British and Australian embassies in Jakarta have warned their nationals in recent days of the potential for radical attacks.

More than 500 contestants competed in online rounds to get to the Muslimah World final in Indonesia, one of which involved the contenders comparing stories of how they came to wear the headscarf.

The contest was first held in 2011 under a different name and was only open to Indonesians, Shanti said, but after the media began comparing it to Miss World, it was rebranded as a Muslim alternative to the world-famous pageant.

Because of its popularity, organisers accepted foreign contestants this year for the first time, with Iran, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Brunei, Nigeria and Indonesia represented.

Ethel, who is the Nigerian Project Director for the pageant, announced this on Sunday, 15 September during a cocktail event at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, with some of the beauty queens that include Miss Kenya, Miss Russia and Miss Ghana in attendance.

She said the essence of hosting the pageant in Nigeria is to create an avenue to project a positive image of Nigeria and the African continent as a whole to the world. The pageant, she stressed, will open doors to investment opportunities and boost the tourism drive of this great nation.

“The core objective is the promotion of cultural integration, racial equality, global peace and co existence,” said Ethel.

Meri Asatiani, former Miss Russia and Miss Tourism World, expressed her excitement on the pageant holding in Nigeria for the first time ever.

“I am really excited to be a part of the first ever Exquisite Face of the World pageant in Nigeria. This is a very beautiful country with welcoming people. There is so much to learn about this country, from the food to the different cultures and I know this year’s contestants will feel the same,” the queen said.

Since its inception in Accra, Ghana, 2006 and the pageant holding for four years successively with the support of former President John Kuffour, the pageant has developed to become one of the biggest beauty pageants to reckon with on the continent.

Obabiyi Aishah Ajibola, a 21-year-old student of the University of Lagos will represent Nigeria in the Muslimah World Pageant in Indonesia today.

The finale of a beauty pageant exclusively for Muslim women will take place in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, in a riposte to the Miss World contest in Bali that has drawn fierce opposition from Islamic radicals.

Twenty contestants will show off the latest Islamic fashion trends in the Muslimah World pageant and will also take part in other activities, such as reciting the Koran, aimed at demonstrating their piety.

“We’re just trying to show the world that Islam is beautiful. We are free and the hijab (Muslim headscarf) is our pride,” said Ajibola.
See Aisha Ajibola’s video:

The contestants can only enter the competition if they wear a headscarf and have undergone three days of “spiritual training” in the run-up to the final in Jakarta, waking up before dawn to pray together and sharpen their Koranic reading skills.

Organisers say they want to show Muslim women there is an alternative to the idea of beauty put forward by the British-run Miss World pageant, and also want to show that opposition to the pageant can be expressed non-violently.

“This year we deliberately held our event just before the Miss World final to show that there are alternative role models for Muslim women,” she said.

Despite a pledge by organisers to drop the famous bikini round for the pageant in the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country, radical anger was not appeased and the protest movement snowballed.

The government finally bowed to the mounting pressure and ordered the whole three-week pageant be moved to Hindu-majority Bali, where it opened on September 8.

Later rounds and the final, on September 28, had originally been scheduled to be held in and around Jakarta, where there is considerable hardline influence.

While beauty is very much at the heart of Muslimah World — contestants’ height and weight is shown on the pageant’s website and it is sponsored by a halal make-up brand — the contestants’ piety is also a big factor.

More than 500 contestants competed in online rounds to get to the final in Indonesia, one of which involved the contenders comparing stories of how they came to wear the headscarf.

On Wednesday night, contestants will retell these stories and answer questions from judges at the final in a Jakarta shopping mall, and the 20 finalists will be whittled down to four before a winner is crowned.

“What I will be looking for is strength of personality — someone with a vision for the future, who gives back to their community and shows that beauty is not just about bodies,” said Jameyah Sheriff, an education expert from Malaysia who is on the judging panel.

Shanti said the contest was first held in 2011 and was then only open to Indonesians but it proved so popular that it was opened up to international entrants.

While expressing displeasure at the expensive rumour, Bamishigbin hoped that this is a sign that the actress will live longer. “It is unfortunate that some people somewhere are just spreading misleading information. But I pray that God will turn it into a positive one for Bukky Ajayi. She will live longer,” he said.

On Monday, the aged actress debunked the death rumour in a phone chat with P.M.NEWS Nollywood Reel. She therefore urged her fans to ignore the rumour.

“I was surprised to hear the rumour as well. About four people had called me concerning this issue, but I didn’t take it seriously until my daughter and her husband also called. I’m hale and hearty, and nothing is wrong with me,” Mama, as the actress is fondly called, said.

She explained that “if it was when I was ill, perhaps, I won’t be surprised. But I’m  okay now, that’s why I’m wondering where the rumour emanated from. ”
