Court remands murder suspect in prison

A security guard, Joel Absolom, who allegedly killed his friend, Abdulahi Abduramon, was on Wednesday remanded in prison by an Apapa Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

Absolom, 36, who resides at 30, Adefemi St., off Mushin Road, Lawanson, Lagos, is facing a charge of murder.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Titus Abolarinwa, ordered that the accused should be remanded at Kirikiri Prisons pending the receipt of advice on the case by the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

He ordered that the case file should be duplicated and sent to the DPP’s office and adjourned the matter to March 6.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp. Tony Elibe, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on Jan. 6, 2017, at Isabo Estate main gate, Surulere, Lagos.

He said that the accused had gone to visit the deceased, also a security guard, in Surulere area of Lagos and they went out for some drinks.

“The deceased took the accused to a beer parlour; after they had some beer, they became drunk and started fighting.

“The accused said the deceased pushed and slapped him, and he then pushed him and he fell down and hit his head on the floor.

“He became unconscious and was rushed to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, Lagos, for treatment but he gave up the ghost,” Elibe said.

He said that the offence contravened Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Section 221 stipulates a death sentence for offenders.
