The Consul-General of Germany in Lagos, Mr Ingo Herbert, on Wednesday announced that about 180 Nigerians had benefited from the Alexander von Humboldt research fellowship programme, since its introduction to Nigeria.

Herbert said in Lagos that the beneficiaries were mostly scientists and scholars selected for scientific researches in Germany, from different Nigerian universities.

The consul-general said that the Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship was initiated to promote academic cooperation between excellent scientists and scholars from other countries with Germany.

“About 180 Nigerian scientists and scholars, mostly professors, have so far benefited from the Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship programmes in Germany.

“These fellows, who studied and conducted different researches in Germany for some time, are still being supported by the German government in conducting research that would contribute to scientific development in Nigeria.

“The German Academic Exchange Service will this year, 2017, deepen our support for scientific research with Nigeria,’’ he said.

Herbert, who restated his government’s commitment to more fruitful relations with Nigeria in the years ahead, disclosed that both countries had had decades of business relations.

The Envoy said that a book was recently presented publicly in celebration of the decades of business relations between Germany and Nigeria.

The consul-general expressed optimism that the many years of business relations between Germany and Nigeria, would in the near future open up more opportunities for renewing business ties between the two countries.

“In spite of the recent economic situation in Nigeria, let me say that there is still a clear interest of German companies and businesses to look at the African continent, with Nigeria, as a country of priority,’’ he added.
