Man remanded for torturing another to death

For allegedly torturing another to death with a cable, 32-year-old Monday Tizhe is to be remanded at the Ikoyi Prisons, an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, ruled on Friday.

Magistrate T.A. Idowu ordered that the accused be remanded pending advice from the state director of public prosecutions.

Consequently, the court did not take the accused’s plea.

The accused, whose address is unknown, appeared before Idowu on a two-count -charge of conspiracy and murder.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Jimah Iseghede, had submitted that the accused used a cable to torture one Mr Nura Amos to death on Jan. 5 at 11.00p.m., at Mechanic Village, Maruwa, Waterside in Maroko, Lagos.

“Tizhe accused the deceased of stealing his phone and money; instead of handing him over to the appropriate authorities, he took the laws into his hands and tortured the deceased to death,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the alleged offences contravene Sections 221 and 231 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Section 221 prescribes death penalty for anybody convicted of murder.

The case has been adjourned till Feb. 2 for mention.
