An expert in public health, Mr. Taiwo Oso, on Friday, said it was a criminal offence for an individual to build a house without toilet facility.

Oso disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Osogbo, on the importance of hygiene to the survival of man.

According to him, it is imperative for people to ensure the safety of their environment and control all factors that can have adverse effects on people’s health in the environment such as water and toilet.

He said “people must always be conscious of the purity of the water they use on daily basis, most especially in the kitchen for the purpose of personal hygiene.

“The sewage disposal is also of paramount importance, you know it is a criminal offence for one to build a house without providing toilet facility.”

He, therefore, urged Nigerians to always wash their hands before cooking or eating and when returning from places like offices, hospitals, markets, toilets, among others.

The expert added that personal hygiene like hand washing had the potency of insulating human from many diseases.

Oso said it had been established by scientists that “a gram of excreta carries one million harmful bacteria, virus and parasites.

“The best way to avoid communicable diseases is by washing hands always; we should always remember to wash our hands
as soon as we return from office, hospital, market, toilet and the rest.

“Since we all agree that prevention is far better than cure, it is always advisable to be conscious of some basic health rules, instead of spending money in the hospital for a cure.”
