Former presidential spokesman in the Goodluck Jonathan administration, Dr. Reuben Abati, has been released by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Abati who confirmed his release to the PREMIUM TIMES this morning, spent 15 days in the cell of the anti-graft agency for allegedly receiving N50m from the former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki who is being tried for misappropriating $2.2 billion arms fund by the agency.

The popular writer from The Guardian newspaper confirmed that he was staying somewhere in Abuja after he was released by the EFCC.

Abati was arrested on 21 October after honouring an invitation from the EFCC. His passport was later seized.

He was granted administrative bail last week but couldn’t fulfill the conditions attached to it and so remained in detention.

It’s not clear whether he was able to fulfil the conditions before he was released today.

There were reports that the writer agreed to return N5m out of the amount he was given by the NSA to the government but he later rescinded the decision.
