A Jos Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday sentenced a 21-year-old labourer, Ezekiel Gyang, for stealing his roommate’s N100, 000.

Gyang, a resident of Foron in Barkin Ladi Local Government area, was charged for criminal breach of trust and stealing.

The Magistrate, Mrs Helen Danboyi, delivered the sentence after the accused pleaded guilty to the charges and begged the court for mercy.

Danboyi, however, gave the convict an option of a fine of N5000 and restitution of N100,250 for the amount that was stolen which he ordered to be paid in three installments.

The magistrate said that Gyang was convicted and sentenced to serve as deterrent to others who might want to engage in similar act.

The Prosecutor, Cpl. Karimu Bashiru, had told the court that one Daniel Sunday, a roommate of Gyang, reported the case at Anglo Jos police station on Oct. 5.

Bashiru said that while Sunday was on the farm, Gyang, stole his N100, 000 and spent the money in buying a phone, some cloths and reveling.

He said the offence committed contravened Section 288 of the Penal Code.
