Court arraigns Man for stealing portraits

Idris Adam, a 25-year-old unemployed man, was on Wednesday arraigned before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court. Lagos over alleged theft of three portraits valued at N90, 000.

Adam, whose address is unknown, is facing one count charge of stealing.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Innocent Uko, told the court that the accused committed the crime on Oct. 14 at the premises of Badagry Heritage Museum.

He said that the accused stole the items from the complainant, one Mr Bayo Amonu.

“The accused went into the premises, saw the portraits on display and took them.

“He was apprehended when he was about to leave the premises,’’ he said.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 285 (1) of the Criminal law, laws of Lagos State Nigeria 2011.

The accused however pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The defence counsel, Mr Timothy Salmon, pleaded with the court to grant the accused bail since the offence was bailable.

The Magistrate, Mr Abiodun Etti, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200, 000 and a surety in like sum.

Etti ordered that the surety must provide evidence of tax payment to Lagos State Government and adjourned the case till Nov. 9 for further hearing.
