Bus driver beats wife with iron rod

For allegedly beating his wife, Keji,with an iron rod and threatening to kill her, a commercial bus driver, Solari Oputa, was on Monday brought before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State on a two-count charge.

The 50-year-old accused, who resides at No. 1, RS Oputa St., Cele Naiza in Ijanikin area of Lagos, is being tried for assault and threat of life.

The accused, who strangled her in an attempt to kill her, committed the offences on Oct. 10 at his house, according to Police Prosecutor Innocent Uko.

“They had an argument and the accused started beating and threatening to kill his wife.

“He boasted that nothing would happen if he killed the woman.”

The offences contravened Section 56 (a) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused, on conviction, may be sentenced to jail for a minimum of two years.

The accused pleaded not guilty and his lawyer, Mr Adeleke Alhassan, pleaded with the court to grant him bail on liberal terms.

Magistrate Abiodun Etti admitted the accused to a bail of N100,000 with one surety in like sum and that the surety should provide evidence of tax payment to the government.

Further hearing in the case has been fixed for Nov. 1.
