A Lugbe Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Wednesday, sentenced a 19-year-old man, Mohammed Sani, to community service for stealing a motorcycle.

The Senior Judge, Mr Garba Ogbede, sentenced Sani of Iddo Village, Airport Road, Abuja, after he pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of theft and attempt to commit the offence.

Ogbede said the convict would clean the court premises, adding that the punishment would have been severe if Sani had not pleaded guilty to the charges.

Ogbede also ordered that the recovered motorcycle be returned to the owner.

Earlier, the Prosecuting Counsel, Mrs Aderonke Imana, told the court that the convict committed the offence on June 25 at Iddo Village.

Imana said that Basiru Garba of Givako village reported the matter at Iddo Police Station on July 3 at about 7 p.m.

She said that the convict stole the complainant’s Qlink motorcycle worth N175,000 to an unknown destination and was arrested on July 17.

Imana added that the convict was arrested at Kachia, Kaduna State with the said motorcycle while attempting to sell it.

“Right now, the motorcycle in question is in police custody,” she said.

The prosecuting counsel said that during the police investigation and interrogation, the convict admitted the two offences.

Iman, who said that the offences contravened sections 287 and 95 of the Penal Code, urged the court to sentence Sani to community service.

She, however, told the court that Garba, the complainant, had written for the voluntary withdrawal of the matter.

The complainant, the prosecutor said did not want any further trouble since the police had recovered the motorcycle.
